LitLab: Aligned Practice for Developing Readers

LitLab helps developing readers build confidence and fluency. Founded by teachers, LitLab gives educators the tools to find and create decodable texts, provide students with meaningful reading practice, and understand how their students are progressing, all aligned to their existing curriculum. The platform combines a library of over 1,500 expert-crafted decodable texts with an AI-powered custom story generator, student-led oral reading fluency practice with real-time AI analysis, and a progress monitoring dashboard that maps directly to the lessons in your phonics program — all in one place.

What LitLab Does

LitLab is organized around four core capabilities that work together to close the gap between explicit phonics instruction and fluent, independent reading.

Aligned to the Phonics Programs You Already Use

LitLab works alongside your existing phonics curriculum. Every text in the library and every story created by the custom generator is mapped to the lesson-level skill progressions of six leading phonics programs‡:

When you select your default phonics program, the library, the generator, and the progress dashboard all reconfigure to show the lessons and stories that match where your students are in their sequence. You assign by lesson, students practice at the right level, and the data comes back aligned to the same scope and sequence your instructional team uses for assessment.

Grounded in the Science of Reading

LitLab was designed by former classroom teachers, literacy specialists, and researchers to address a gap that most supplemental programs leave open: the bridge from decoding to fluent, connected reading. As reading scientist Louisa Moats wrote, “fluent, accurate decoding is a hallmark of skilled reading,” and LitLab is purpose-built to develop exactly that skill through high-volume, high-quality practice with decodable text. LitLab meets the ESSA Tier IV standard of evidence, demonstrating a strong, research-based rationale for improving foundational literacy outcomes. The logic model was built in partnership with leading third-party researchers and is publicly available. A Tier II quasi-experimental efficacy study is currently underway.
