LitLab was built for classrooms teaching foundational literacy — serving one of the most privacy-sensitive populations in education. Every product decision starts from the question: “Is this safe for developing readers and the families who trust us with their kids’ learning?”

Compliance

Our Privacy Commitments

No data sold

LitLab does not sell student data. Not aggregated, not anonymized — not at all.

No AI training on student data

Student recordings and student-generated content are never used to train AI models — ours or any third party’s.

No student emails required

Students sign in with a class code + name selection. No email addresses collected for under-13 users.

Teacher-controlled AI

Students never interact with a chatbot or open-ended AI. All AI generation is tightly constrained with restricted inputs.

How AI Is Constrained

LitLab’s AI is purpose-built for decodable text generation. It:
  • Does not accept open-ended student prompts
  • Does not generate content outside the constraints (such as phonics lessons, character name, character type, and setting)
  • Is not a general-purpose chatbot
This is a deliberate design choice. The AI only does one job — generate a curriculum-aligned decodable story — and it does it within a tight set of guardrails. See Student Creator for more details about students’ use of AI.

Data Privacy Agreements

LitLab Premium includes access to a signed Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) tailored to your district’s standard contract language. Common templates we already support:
  • Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) National Standard DPA
  • State-specific exhibits (Illinois SOPPA, California AB 1584, etc.)
  • District-specific DPA templates
Email ops@litlab.ai to request a DPA.

Data Storage

We commit to delete Student Data within sixty days of receiving a deletion request. If we do not receive a deletion request, LitLab may delete or de-identify personal information following a period of inactivity in accordance with our standard data retention schedule.

Reporting a Concern

If you spot something that worries you about student privacy or content safety, email support@litlab.ai. We respond ASAP.
