# Student Data Privacy & Safety

> LitLab is FERPA, COPPA, and SOPPA compliant. Student data is never sold or used for AI training, and all AI content is teacher-controlled.

LitLab was built for classrooms teaching foundational literacy — serving one of the most privacy-sensitive populations in education. Every product decision starts from the question: "Is this safe for developing readers and the families who trust us with their kids' learning?"

## Our Privacy Commitments

## How AI Is Constrained

LitLab's AI is purpose-built for decodable text generation. It:

* Does **not** accept open-ended student prompts
* Does **not** generate content outside the constraints (such as phonics lessons, character name, character type, and setting)
* Is **not** a general-purpose chatbot

This is a deliberate design choice. The AI only does one job — generate a curriculum-aligned decodable story — and it does it within a tight set of guardrails.

## Data Privacy Agreements

LitLab Premium includes access to a signed Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) tailored to your district's standard contract language. Common templates we already support:

* Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) National Standard DPA
* State-specific exhibits (Illinois SOPPA, California AB 1584, etc.)
* District-specific DPA templates

## Data Storage

We commit to delete Student Data within sixty days of receiving a deletion request.

If we do not receive a deletion request, LitLab **may** delete or de-identify personal information following a period of inactivity in accordance with our standard data retention schedule.
