# Back-to-School Setup: Roll Over Your Classes in Minutes

> Roll over your LitLab classes for the new school year. Archive last year's classes, import your new roster, and pick a starting phonics skill.

This short setup wizard opens the first time you log in after July 27, 2026, to help you roll over from last year to this year. It archives last year's classes, brings in this year's roster (from Clever, ClassLink, or manual entry), confirms your default phonics curriculum, and — for any students you rostered — creates a first assignment at the starting skill you pick.

The wizard only shows up once. Once you finish it, it won't reappear on future sign-ins.

## What to expect

The wizard takes just a few clicks to complete. Nothing is written to your account until you reach the final **Done** step, so you can go back and change your selections at any point along the way.

You'll move through these steps:

## What gets archived

On the archive step, LitLab selects your classes from last year to archive.

### Clever and ClassLink classes

Rostered classes are auto-archived when they look like last year's:

* **Dropped from this year's roster** — the class is no longer in the roster your district sends to LitLab.
* **Created before the new school year** — the class is still in the roster but was created in LitLab before the school-year cutoff. This catches classes when your district hasn't rolled its Clever/ClassLink roster over yet, which is common at back-to-school time.

### Manual classes

Manual classes are handled two ways on the same step:

* **Older manual classes** — a manual class whose last activity predates the season cutoff is pre-checked for archiving, but you can uncheck it to keep it active.
* **Recent manual classes** — a manual class created around or after the cutoff is shown as an opt-in toggle, left unchecked by default.

Each row shows the student count and the date the class was last updated, so you can tell at a glance whether a class is still in use.

## Importing this year's roster

On the roster step, Clever and ClassLink teachers see the classes their district has rostered for the **current school year only**. Last year's classes are filtered out even if they're still in your district's roster feed, so you're not offered stale classes to re-import.

* **ClassLink** — LitLab uses the school-year field on each class's academic term to determine the current year.
* **Clever** — LitLab uses each section's term dates to determine the current year. If your district doesn't publish term data in Clever (this is optional and many districts don't), the filter falls open and shows all rostered classes so nothing is hidden by mistake.

If your district hasn't rolled its roster over yet, you may not see any current-year classes to import — that's expected. You can re-sync later once your district's roster is updated. See [Rostering](/account/rostering) for how re-sync works.

Manual teachers see a simple form: name the class, pick a grade, and add students one at a time.

## Curriculum and the starting skill

On the curriculum step, LitLab shows you a phonics sequence to use as your default. If you already had a default set from a previous year, it's pre-selected.

* **If you rostered students** in the previous step, you'll also see a **starting skill** picker. Choose where your students are starting — LitLab uses it to seed an initial assignment for each new class, matching the same "5 stories, recording off" defaults as the standard [add students](/account/rostering) flow.
* **If you didn't roster any students**, the starting-skill picker is hidden — there's no one to assign work to yet. You still choose a default curriculum, which LitLab will use later when you create your own assignments.

## Finishing the wizard

Clicking **Done** on the final step is what actually commits your choices:

* Selected classes are archived.
* Imported or manually-created classes and students are added to your dashboard.
* Your default curriculum (and starting skill, if you picked one) is saved.
* Initial assignments are created for any classes you rostered this session.

After that, the wizard closes and won't run again for the rest of the school year.

## Unarchiving a class

Archiving isn't permanent. If you archive a class by mistake — from the wizard or from your dashboard menu — you can unarchive it later from the **Archived** view on your dashboard. Student profiles, recordings, and assignment history are preserved while a class is archived, so unarchiving picks up right where you left off.
